Potteric Carr Visitor Centre

Bauman Lyons were appointed, following a successful competitive tender, to work with Yorkshire Wildlife Trust to scope and design a new purpose-built visitor centre and administrative centre for the trust at the Potteric Carr wetlands nature reserve near Doncaster.

Highlights

  • With a limited budget, an ecologically sensitive site and an ambitious brief, YWT & BL worked together to create a business plan & building design based on a user-focussed visitor experience and series of flexible multi-functional spaces, directly engaging with the wetland habitats.
  • Cross-programming spatial functions allowed us to create synergies and minimise duplication. Early adoption of the Design for Manufacture and Assembly approach enabled further efficiencies, and increased viability.
  • Generous external deck spaces were designed at the start and finish of long walks around the site, adjacent to a cafe & bistro space and poised over the pond where, periodically, murmurations of starlings can be seen at dusk.
